"I had no idea that they were treated that way”, a lady in her mid to late fifties stated aloud to her friends after she read the display. The walls were filled with illustrations, short videos, etc. of how American Indians were stripped of everything they knew and forced to live in institutions. I should not be amazed at the comment or even the fact that she felt comfortable enough to say it aloud. The words flowed freely from her well-meaning sentiment in childlike naivety. “There are people that really do live under a rock. Just another living example of how education has failed", I stated loud enough for all to hear. No one said another word. The room seemed much smaller at that point. Apathy lives not in the light or in the shadows. It dwells in a dimension that I, nevertheless, will never fully comprehend. edited by Vonda Smith
